Perfume dupes: cheaper alternatives to 14 popular perfumes

A dupe is a cheaper perfume made, or simply found, to smell like a famous one. Some get close; most get the first impression right and drift in the dry-down. Below are cheaper alternatives to 14 perfumes we cover, what’s different about each, and how to test a dupe before you trust it. For the most-copied perfume of all, see our Baccarat Rouge 540 dupes.

What a dupe is, and isn’t

TypeWhat it isIs it legal?
Dupe or cloneA different perfume, under its own name and brand, built to smell like a famous one. Some are sold openly as “inspired by” the original.Generally yes in the US, as long as it doesn’t copy the original’s name, logo or bottle in a way that misleads buyers.
AlternativeA perfume from another brand that happens to share a style or key notes, without trying to copy anything.Yes.
Fake or counterfeitA copy sold as the real thing, with the brand’s name and packaging. Ingredients and safety are unknown.No. Avoid unusually cheap listings on marketplaces.

This is general information, not legal advice. Most of what we list below are alternatives in the second sense: established perfumes that people reach for when the original is out of budget. Editorial inference

Dupe guides

How to test a dupe

  1. One on each wrist

Spray the original on one wrist and the dupe on the other. Smelling them minutes apart on paper strips isn’t a fair test.

  2. Check again after an hour

Dupes usually nail the opening. The difference shows in the heart and base, an hour or more in.

  3. Time it

Cheaper perfumes often fade sooner. Note when you stop smelling each one, and ask someone nearby.

  4. Buy small first

A sample or the smallest bottle is the cheapest way to find out. Our samples and decants guide covers the options.

A dupe, or a decant of the real thing?

If you love the original and only wear it now and then, a decant (a few milliliters poured from a full bottle) gives you the real scent for a fraction of the bottle price. A dupe makes more sense if you want to spray freely every day and can live with it being close rather than identical. Editorial inference

Common questions

Are perfume dupes legal?

Generally, yes, in the US. A scent itself is very hard to protect, so other brands can make perfumes that smell similar. What they can’t do is copy the original’s name, logo or packaging in a way that misleads buyers; that’s counterfeiting. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are perfume dupes as good as the original?

Sometimes close, rarely identical. Most dupes match the opening well and differ in the dry-down, and many don’t last as long. Test both side by side on skin for a few hours before deciding.

Is a dupe the same as a fake perfume?

No. A dupe is sold under its own name. A fake is a copy sold as the real brand, often on marketplaces at suspiciously low prices, with unknown ingredients. Buy from authorized retailers to avoid fakes.

What is the most popular perfume to dupe?

Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Baccarat Rouge 540 is probably the most copied perfume of recent years; see our Baccarat Rouge 540 dupes. Creed Aventus and Tom Ford’s private blends are also widely duped.

Alternatives are chosen from the notes each brand lists and from widely shared wear reports, not from our own side-by-side tests. “Cheaper” compares usual retail prices; we don’t list prices because they change. Read how we compare perfumes.
