What Eros smells like

Editorial inference

It opens with a blast of fresh mint, lemon and crisp green apple, almost like mint candy. Within half an hour that coolness settles onto a sweet, warm base of tonka bean and vanilla, with ambroxan and cedar keeping it from turning sugary. The mix of cold and sweet is what makes it so recognisable, and it stays loud for hours.

Skin, climate and how much you spray all move these numbers, which is one more reason to try a sample before a bottle.

The Eros line, explained

Editorial inference

Versace has released a long line of Eros perfumes, and most share the same blue or dark bottle shape, so check the label. The Eau de Toilette on this page is the 2012 original by Aurélien Guichard, and still the one most people mean when they say Eros.

The Eau de Parfum (2020) keeps the mint and apple but feels smoother, with a creamier vanilla, cedar and sandalwood base; many reviewers call it more refined, while others prefer the EDT’s energy. Eros Parfum (2021) goes darker again, with black pepper, lavender and a warm amber, benzoin and vanilla base.

Other names are separate perfumes. Eros Flame (2018, by Olivier Pescheux) swaps the mint for citrus, black pepper and rosemary over a woody vanilla base. Eros Energy (2024) is a bright, citrus-heavy Eau de Parfum. Eros Najim (2024) is a warm, spicy Parfum of caramel, cardamom, oud and incense. Eros Pour Femme is a floral perfume for women that shares only the name.

Eros questions

What does Versace Eros smell like?

Sweet and fresh at once. It opens with mint, lemon and green apple, like mint candy, then settles into warm vanilla and tonka bean with cedar and ambroxan underneath. It’s loud, sweet and very recognisable.

Is Eros good for the office?

Only with a light hand. It projects strongly for the first few hours, so one spray is as much as most offices can handle. For work, something quieter like Bleu de Chanel is the easier choice; save Eros for evenings.

Eros Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum?

The EDT is brighter, mintier and sweeter, and it’s the classic. The EDP is smoother and creamier, with more woods and a little leather, and many find it more grown-up. Performance is similar; pick on character, and try both on skin if you can.

Eros or Sauvage?

Choose Eros for sweet, minty nights out, and Sauvage for something bright and peppery that works day and night. Both are loud and both use ambroxan, but Eros is built on vanilla and tonka, which makes it much sweeter.

How long does Eros last?

Usually six to eight hours on skin, which is long for an Eau de Toilette, and longer on clothes. The loud part is the first two or three hours; after that it’s a sweet vanilla close to the skin.
