What Le Male smells like
Editorial inference
It opens with fresh mint, lavender and a little cardamom and bergamot, which gives it a clean, shaving-soap feel. Cinnamon and orange blossom warm it up in the heart, and it settles into a soft, powdery base of vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood. The mix of cool barbershop freshness and sweet vanilla is what made it famous, and it stays smooth rather than sharp.
Le Male notes
Brand description Source: Launch notes via Fragrantica.
- Heart notes
- cinnamon, orange blossom, caraway
- Base notes
- vanilla, tonka bean, amber, sandalwood, cedar
Jean Paul Gaultier’s US site names only three key notes: mint, lavender and vanilla. The fuller pyramid above is the one Fragrantica lists; some sources put lavender in the heart and list cumin instead of caraway.
How long Le Male lasts, and how it wears
Editorial inference Typical figures, not our own timing.
- How long it lasts
- 4–7 hours
- Projection
- Moderate for the first hour or two, then a soft vanilla and lavender close to the skin
- Season
- Autumn and winter; fine on cooler spring evenings
- Best for
- Everyday wear, the office, dates and casual evenings
- How much to spray
- 3–4 sprays
Based on the Eau de Toilette concentration, a vanilla, tonka and sandalwood base, and wear reports on Fragrantica, which vary widely: some reviewers get three or four hours, others six to eight. Many longtime wearers say bottles made before about 2016 were stronger than today’s. Skin, climate and how much you spray all move these numbers, which is one more reason to try a sample before a bottle.

The Le Male line, explained
Editorial inference
Le Male launched in 1995 in its famous torso bottle, packed in a tin can, as the men’s partner to Gaultier’s Classique. It was composed by Francis Kurkdjian, then in his twenties, who later made Baccarat Rouge 540. The Eau de Toilette on this page is that original, and still the one most people mean.
The line now runs to dozens of versions in similar bottles, so check the label. Le Male Le Parfum (2020) is darker and more powdery, with cardamom, iris and woods. Le Male Elixir (2023) keeps the lavender and mint and adds honey, benzoin, tonka and tobacco, making it sweeter and much heavier. Le Male Lover (2024) is a salty, beachy vanilla.
Ultra Male (2015, also by Kurkdjian) adds pear and black vanilla for a fruitier, sweeter take, and is still sold on Gaultier’s US site despite rumours it was discontinued. Le Beau (2019) and Le Beau Le Parfum (2022) are coconut scents that share only the bottle style. The yearly Pride editions are new citrus perfumes, not the original in a special bottle.

Le Male questions
What does Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male smell like?
Clean and sweet at once. Mint and lavender give it a fresh, shaving-soap opening, cinnamon and orange blossom warm it up, and it settles into soft vanilla, tonka and sandalwood. Many people describe it as a barbershop crossed with vanilla cake.
Le Male or Le Male Elixir?
Choose the original Eau de Toilette for a soft, everyday lavender-vanilla, and Elixir if you want it much stronger, sweeter and warmer, with honey and tobacco. Elixir is best kept for cold evenings.
Le Male or Versace Eros?
Both pair mint with vanilla. Le Male is softer, more powdery and more comforting, with lavender and cinnamon. Eros is louder and sharper, with green apple and a bigger trail.
Is Le Male still the same as in the 1990s?
Not exactly. Many longtime wearers say today’s bottles are lighter and less complex than the originals, with less lavender. The character, mint and lavender over vanilla, is the same.
How long does Le Male last?
Usually four to seven hours on skin, though reports vary a lot. It’s strongest in the first hour or two, then becomes a soft vanilla close to the skin. It lasts longer on clothes.
