Best for: everyday wear, the office and most occasions.
Skip it if: you want something people will notice across a room.

Best for: everyday wear on a budget.
Skip it if: you already own Sauvage; they sit close together. Read Dylan Blue vs Sauvage.
Light scents for summer
Aquatic and green scents feel cool in heat and humidity, where sweeter fragrances can turn cloying. They fade faster, so a travel spray helps.

Marine notes, bergamot and cedar. The classic beach-and-sunshine scent, light enough for hot, humid days.
Typical wear: 4–6 hours. Season: Spring and summer; at its best in hot weather.

Aftershave, cologne or EDT?
The words get used loosely, which makes shopping confusing. Editorial inference
| Word | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Cologne | In the US, any fragrance marketed to men. Strictly, Eau de Cologne is the lightest strength, at about 2–4% perfume oil. |
| Aftershave | A light, often alcohol-based splash or balm for soothing skin after shaving, lightly scented. In the UK, “aftershave” is also everyday slang for men’s fragrance. |
| Eau de Toilette (EDT) | The most common men’s strength: fresher and lighter. Most of the picks above are EDTs. |
| Eau de Parfum (EDP) | Richer and usually longer-lasting, and often a reworked scent rather than a stronger copy. |
If you want the scent to last, buy the Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum rather than the matching aftershave. Our guides to perfume vs cologne and EDT vs EDP go deeper.
How to choose
Start fresh
If you’re unsure, a fresh citrus-and-woods scent like Bleu de Chanel is the lowest-risk choice for work and everyday wear.
Match the season
Aquatic and citrus scents for hot days; vanilla, tobacco and woods for cold ones. Many men keep one of each.
Sample before you buy
A scent changes over hours on skin. Wear a sample for a full day before buying a bottle; our samples and decants guide shows the cheapest ways.
Two or three sprays
Chest and neck are enough. Loud scents like Sauvage and Eros need fewer sprays, not more. See where to apply fragrance.
Common questions
What is the best men’s fragrance for everyday wear?
Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette is the safest everyday pick: fresh citrus over cedar and sandalwood, polished enough for work and easy to like. Dior Sauvage is the louder alternative, and Versace Dylan Blue is a cheaper one in the same style.
Which men’s fragrance lasts the longest?
Of the fragrances we cover, Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille has the longest typical wear, at 10 to 12 hours or more. Among fresh scents, YSL Y Eau de Parfum lasts longest, at a typical 8 to 10 hours. Wear varies with skin, climate and how much you spray.
Is aftershave the same as cologne?
Not quite. Aftershave is a light splash or balm for soothing skin after shaving, with only a little scent. Cologne, in American usage, means any men’s fragrance. In the UK, people often say “aftershave” when they mean a men’s fragrance in general.
What is the most popular men’s fragrance?
Dior Sauvage has been one of the best-selling men’s fragrances for years, and Bleu de Chanel and Acqua di Giò are close behind in popularity. Popular also means common, so if you want to stand out, look at the woody picks instead.
Can men wear unisex or women’s perfume?
Yes. Marketing labels are a guide, not a rule. Tobacco Vanille and Baccarat Rouge 540 are sold as unisex, and plenty of men wear scents marketed to women.
Picks are chosen from the notes each brand lists and the typical wear and season figures on each fragrance’s page, not from our own wear tests. Wear varies with skin, climate and how much you spray. Read how we compare perfumes.
