Samples vs decants vs travel sprays: what each is and what they cost per ml

The short answer: a sample is a tiny vial for a first sniff, a decant is real perfume rebottled into a smaller atomizer by a third-party seller, and a travel spray is a small bottle made by the brand itself. The smaller the amount, the more you pay per ml. In our example, a 2 ml decant cost more than two and a half times as much per ml as the full bottle. That premium is worth paying until you know you love a scent.

How much perfume is that?

It’s easy to underestimate how small a sample is, and how big a full bottle is. Each square below is 1 ml, which is roughly 10 sprays. Editorial inference

One square = 1 ml. Spray counts assume about 0.1 ml per spray; atomizers vary.

At three sprays a day, a 1 ml sample lasts about three days, a 10 ml decant about a month, and a 100 ml bottle close to a year of daily wear.

Samples

A sample is the smallest amount you can buy, usually 1 to 2 ml in a glass vial with a dab-on stopper or a tiny sprayer. There are three ways to get one.

Free with an order

Retailers and brands often add samples to online orders. Sephora, for example, says you can choose two free samples with every online merchandise order. They cost nothing extra, but you need to be buying something anyway, and you choose from what’s available rather than any perfume you like.

Paid sample vials

Decant sellers sell 1 ml vials of almost anything. In September 2026, Surrender to Chance listed Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum from $3.99 for a 1 ml vial. That’s about $4 per ml, more than twice the full-bottle rate, but $4 is a small price for finding out you don’t like something.

Sampler sets

These are boxes of many small vials, often from different brands. Sephora’s own sampler sets are a good example: in September 2026, its Cologne Sampler Set cost $98 for 15 samples of 1 to 2 ml, plus a certificate you can redeem for a full-size bottle of one of the featured scents. The value there is really the bottle; the samples help you choose it.

Best for: the first try. One wear on skin tells you far more than a paper strip in a store, and it lets you see how a scent changes over a whole day.

Decants

A decant is perfume that someone has transferred from a full retail bottle into a smaller atomizer, typically 2, 5, 10 or 30 ml. Decants are sold by independent sellers, not by the brands. You get the real juice in a plain, unbranded bottle, usually with a spray top.

Decants fill the gap between a one-wear sample and a full bottle. A 5 or 10 ml decant is enough to wear a scent through different weather and moods before you commit, and it’s often all you need of something you only wear now and then.

They make the most sense for expensive perfumes. Baccarat Rouge 540, for example, costs several times as much as a typical designer bottle, and some people barely smell it on themselves, so a few weeks with a 5 ml decant is a much cheaper way to find out whether it works for you.

The catch is trust. Because the seller refills the bottle themselves, you’re relying on them to use the genuine perfume and store it well. Stick to established sellers with a long track record and plenty of reviews; there’s more on this below.

Best for: living with a scent for a few weeks, or owning a little of something you’d never finish a whole bottle of.

Travel sprays

A travel spray is a small bottle made and sealed by the brand, usually 10 to 30 ml. Some are simply miniatures; others, like Chanel’s Twist and Spray, are refillable cases sold with several cartridges. Because they come from the brand, there’s no question about authenticity, and they tend to be sturdier than a glass decant.

You pay for that. In September 2026, Maison Margiela’s 10 ml Replica By the Fireplace travel spray was $32 at Sephora, or $3.20 per ml, against $170 for the 100 ml bottle, or $1.70 per ml.

That premium matters less on inexpensive perfumes. Ariana Grande Cloud, for instance, comes in a 10 ml mini at Sephora and Ulta Beauty that costs little enough to serve as your sample.

They’re also handy for flying. The TSA’s 3-1-1 rule has long limited carry-on liquids to containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and anything in the 10 to 30 ml range fits easily in your liquids bag. Some airports are relaxing the limit as new scanners arrive, so check the TSA’s current rules before you fly.

Best for: a scent you already love and want to carry with you.

What they cost per ml

To keep the comparison fair, the chart below follows one perfume, Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum (the richer sister of the Eau de Toilette), from a 1 ml vial up to a 100 ml bottle. Two things stand out: the price per ml drops steadily as the size goes up, and a 32 ml decant costs about the same per ml as a 60 ml bottle at Sephora.

Travel sprays vs the standard bottle

Travel sprays sit between decants and bottles. Chanel’s refillable Twist and Spray set for Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum works out cheaper per ml than the 50 ml bottle of the same scent, but well above the 100 ml.

What they cost per wear

Cost per ml hides the more useful number: how much each time you wear it. Assuming three sprays, or about 0.3 ml, per wear, here’s the same Sauvage example. Editorial inference

2 ml decant, $9.29

$1.39

per wear, about 6 wears

10 ml decant, $28.39

$0.85

per wear, about 33 wears

100 ml bottle, $173

$0.52

per wear, about 330 wears

The bottle only wins if you actually get through it. If a 100 ml bottle ends up worn 20 times before you move on, each wear cost you over $8. For a scent you’ll wear once a month, a 10 ml decant is the cheaper way to own it.

Which should you buy?

  1. Never smelled it

    Get a sample

Wear it for a full day, on skin, before you spend more.

  2. Liked the sample

    Get a 5–10 ml decant

Live with it for a few weeks, in different weather.

  3. Wear it most weeks

    Buy the bottle

The biggest size you’ll realistically finish is the cheapest per wear.

  4. Want it on the go

    Add a travel spray

Or refill an empty decant atomizer from your bottle for free.

That last tip is worth repeating: once you own the bottle, a refillable travel atomizer costs a few dollars and gets you the portability of a travel spray at the full-bottle price per ml.

Buying decants safely

  • Buy from established sellers. Look for a long trading history, a real customer-service contact and plenty of independent reviews.
  • Check the exact version. Sauvage Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum and Elixir are different scents. A listing should name the concentration, not just the perfume. Our EDT vs EDP vs Parfum guide explains why this matters.
  • Be wary of prices far below everyone else’s. A decant can’t sensibly cost much less per ml than the seller paid for the bottle.
  • Prefer glass. Glass atomizers hold perfume better than plastic ones over time.
  • Store it like a bottle. Keep decants out of heat and sunlight, and don’t leave them sitting for years.

Common questions

What is a perfume decant?

Perfume transferred from a full retail bottle into a smaller atomizer, usually 2 to 30 ml, by a third-party seller rather than the brand. You get the real perfume in a smaller amount, but in an unbranded bottle.

Are decants cheaper than buying the full bottle?

Per bottle, yes; per ml, usually not. In our example, Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum cost $4.65 per ml as a 2 ml decant and $1.73 per ml as a 100 ml bottle. Decants save money when you would never finish a full bottle.

What’s the difference between a sample and a decant?

Mostly size and purpose. A sample is 1 to 2 ml, enough for a few wears, and can come from the brand or a decant seller. A decant is usually 5 ml or more, always from a third-party seller, and meant for wearing a scent over weeks.

How many sprays are in 1 ml of perfume?

Roughly 10, as a rule of thumb. Atomizers vary, so treat it as an estimate: a 2 ml decant is about 20 sprays and a 100 ml bottle about 1,000.

Is a travel spray worth it?

Only if you value the portability. Brand travel sprays usually cost more per ml than the standard bottle. If you already own the bottle, a refillable atomizer does the same job for much less.

Do free samples smell the same as the bottle?

They should be the same perfume, but make sure the sample is the same version (EDT, EDP or Parfum) as the bottle you’re considering. Vials with a dab-on stopper also go on differently from a spray, so a spray sample gives you a truer idea of how the bottle will wear.
