What Sauvage smells like
Editorial inference
It opens with a juicy burst of bergamot and a peppery kick, then settles quickly into ambroxan: a dry, slightly salty, mineral note that carries most of the scent. It’s bright and loud rather than subtle, and the character stays much the same from first spray to dry-down.

- How long it lasts
- 6–8 hours
- Projection
- Strong for the first two hours, then a moderate trail that stays noticeable
- Season
- Spring and summer at its best, wearable year-round
- Best for
- Daytime, casual, going out; the office only with a light hand
- How much to spray
- 1–2 sprays
Estimate based on the concentration (Eau de Toilette) and its ambroxan-led base, which is known for staying power, plus the broad consensus of Fragrantica and Basenotes reviewers that it projects and lasts unusually well for an EDT. Skin, climate and how much you spray all move these numbers, which is one more reason to try a sample before a bottle.
Sauvage is one of our best men’s fragrances.

Should you sample it?
Editorial inference
You might like it if
You want something fresh and confident for warm weather or daytime, and you like a scent that gets noticed.
You might skip it if
Peppery “blue” fragrances feel harsh to you, or you’d rather not smell like one of the most widely worn fragrances around.
Is Sauvage too common?
Editorial inference
It’s about as common as a fragrance gets. Dior calls the Eau de Toilette its best-selling men’s fragrance of all time, and Business of Fashion has reported that Sauvage became the world’s best-selling fragrance, men’s and women’s combined. In practice that means plenty of people will recognise it on you, especially in offices, bars and anywhere with a lot of men in their twenties and thirties.
Whether that matters is personal. Popularity is partly a sign that it works: it’s fresh, easy to like and strong enough to be noticed. But if you want people to remember your scent rather than place it, being one of many Sauvage wearers takes some of the fun out of it. Its strength makes this worse, because a loud scent is easier to recognise from across a room.
If you like the style but not the ubiquity, there are two routes. Stay in the family with a less common version, such as the Parfum or Elixir, which smell noticeably different from the EDT. Or try the alternatives below: Prada Luna Rossa Carbon keeps the fresh, mineral feel, and Hermès H24 offers a modern freshness that almost nobody else is wearing.
Versions of Sauvage
The same name covers several different perfumes. Here is how they relate, so you sample the right one.
| Version | Launched | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Sauvage Eau de ToiletteFrançois Demachy | 2015 | This page. The original: bright bergamot and pepper over dry, mineral ambroxan, and the freshest and sharpest of the line. |
| Sauvage Eau de ParfumFrançois Demachy | 2018 | Keeps the bergamot and pepper but adds lavender and a vanilla accord to the ambroxan base, so it smells rounder, warmer and a little sweeter. |
| Sauvage ParfumFrançois Demachy | 2019 | Dior lists mandarin, tonka bean and sandalwood: a creamier, warmer and more ambery take that moves well away from the EDT’s sharp freshness. |
| Sauvage ElixirFrançois Demachy | 2021 | A darker, denser composition of grapefruit, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), lavender and rich woods; closer to a spicy classic than a stronger EDT. |
| Sauvage Eau ForteFrancis Kurkdjian | 2024 | An alcohol-free, water-based parfum built on cool spices, lavender and musky woods, meant to sit between the freshness of an EDT and the intensity of a parfum. |
| Sauvage ExtraitFrancis Kurkdjian | 2026 | Dior’s first extrait de parfum for men: lavender and bergamot over Vietnamese oud, patchouli, vetiver and cedar, so much woodier and smokier than the EDT. |
| Eau SauvageEdmond Roudnitska | 1966 | A different, much older Dior fragrance with a similar name: a citrus-herbal classic, not a version of Sauvage. |

Sauvage questions
How long does Sauvage last?
Most people get six to eight hours from the Eau de Toilette, which is long for the concentration. The ambroxan base is what holds on: after the bergamot fades, a dry, mineral trail stays on skin and clothes well into the day. Reports vary a lot from person to person, so treat this as a typical range rather than a promise.
Is Sauvage good for summer?
Yes, the EDT is at its best in warm weather: bergamot and pepper feel bright and clean in the heat. The catch is strength, since heat makes it project even more, so use fewer sprays on hot days. The Eau de Parfum and Elixir are warmer and better kept for cooler months.
How many sprays of Sauvage should I use?
One or two sprays is enough for most situations, and one is plenty for an office or a small space. Sauvage projects strongly for an Eau de Toilette, so it’s easy to overdo. Spray skin, not the air around you, and give it an hour before deciding you need more.
Is Sauvage EDT or EDP better?
Neither is better; they suit different people. The EDT is sharper, fresher and more peppery, which works for warm weather and daytime. The EDP adds lavender and vanilla, so it’s smoother, rounder and slightly sweeter, and many people who find the EDT harsh prefer it. Sample both and compare them after an hour, when the difference shows.
Is Dior Sauvage worth it?
It’s worth it if you want a fresh scent that lasts and gets noticed, and you don’t mind wearing something many people recognise. It’s less worth it if you want something distinctive or subtle, because ubiquity and loudness are its two main drawbacks. Try a sample on skin for a full day before buying a bottle.
Is Sauvage the same as Eau Sauvage?
No. Eau Sauvage is a separate Dior fragrance from 1966, created by Edmond Roudnitska, and it’s a classic citrus and herbal cologne-style scent. Sauvage (2015) is the modern peppery, ambroxan-based fragrance on this page. The names are close enough that they’re often confused on shop shelves, so check the bottle.
