What Vanilla Sex smells like
Editorial inference
It opens on vanilla with a sharp note of bitter almond, which reads to many people like marzipan or cherry-almond. Within the hour the almond softens and it becomes a smooth, creamy vanilla, warmed by sandalwood and a little jasmine and orris. Underneath there’s an animalic, skin-like warmth: some people find it sensual, others find it slightly odd. It stays sweet but never sugary, and it wears close.

Why everyone talks about Vanilla Sex
Editorial inference
Vanilla Sex joined Tom Ford’s Private Blend line, the brand’s higher-priced collection, in December 2023. Its name got attention first, but it also won the Fragrance Foundation’s 2024 award for Fragrance of the Year in the Universal Luxury category. In some markets it is sold simply as Vanilla.
It isn’t a sugary vanilla. Tom Ford describes it as “an enveloping amber scent of vanilla notes, white florals and sandalwood”, and the bitter almond and animalic accord make it smell more like warm skin than like a cake. That is exactly why reviews are split: people either love it or can’t understand the fuss.
Vanilla Sex vs Tobacco Vanille and Tobacco Chocolat
Editorial inference
Tobacco Vanille, Tom Ford’s 2007 classic, is sweeter and louder, with honeyed pipe tobacco and dried fruit. Tobacco Chocolat (2026) swaps the vanilla for dark chocolate and keeps the tobacco. Vanilla Sex is the only one of the three with no tobacco at all, and the one that stays closest to the skin.
Because it has no tobacco, Vanilla Sex also layers well with the other two. Our three-way comparison has the details and a layering tip.

Vanilla Sex questions
What does Tom Ford Vanilla Sex smell like?
Creamy vanilla with bitter almond at first, then sandalwood, jasmine and orris. It’s rich and warm but not sugary, with an animalic, skin-like edge underneath.
How long does Vanilla Sex last?
Usually six to eight hours. It projects for the first hour or two, then settles close to the skin, so people near you notice it more than people across the room.
Is Vanilla Sex for men or women?
Both. Like most of Tom Ford’s Private Blend line, it isn’t aimed at one gender, and a rich vanilla like this suits anyone.
Is Vanilla Sex the same as Tom Ford Vanilla?
Yes. The same Eau de Parfum is sold simply as Vanilla in some markets.
Can you layer Vanilla Sex with Tobacco Vanille or Tobacco Chocolat?
It’s a natural pairing, because Vanilla Sex has no tobacco. Our Vanilla Sex vs Tobacco Chocolat vs Tobacco Vanille comparison suggests how. We haven’t tested the combinations ourselves, so try them with samples first.
