What Donna Born in Roma smells like

Editorial inference

The first spray is bright and juicy, with blackcurrant, bergamot and a prickle of pink pepper. Within minutes the jasmine takes over: creamy and heady rather than soapy, softened by a note of jasmine tea. The dry-down is where it earns its fans. Valentino calls the vanilla “rich, leathery, smoky”, and with cashmeran and guaiac wood underneath it smells warm, woody and a little like expensive suede, not like dessert.

You might like it if

You might skip it if

Heady jasmine gives you a headache, or you want something light and fresh for the office; two sprays of the original fill a small room.

Why it took off

Editorial inference

Donna Born in Roma launched in 2019 with a matching men’s scent, Uomo Born in Roma, and both bottles carry the studs Valentino uses on its bags and shoes. It became one of the most talked-about designer perfumes on TikTok, where it is regularly named as a compliment-getter and a “smells expensive” pick.

The formula behind that is simple: a sweet, easy jasmine and a vanilla that stays dry and woody instead of sugary. That puts it between the cozy gourmands, like La Vie est Belle, and the polished evening florals, like Good Girl, which is why it keeps coming up in comparisons with both.

Born in Roma vs Prada Paradoxe

Editorial inference

The comparison people search for most. Both are sweet, modern florals with a vanilla-amber base, and both are big gift picks. Paradoxe is built on neroli and amber and reads cleaner and more luminous. Born in Roma is built on jasmine and smoky vanilla and reads warmer, sweeter and louder.

If you want one for daytime and the office, try Paradoxe first. If you want the one for evenings and to be noticed, try Born in Roma.

The Born in Roma line, explained

Editorial inference

Valentino releases new Born in Roma editions almost every year, all in the same studded bottle in different colors, so check the label. The Eau de Parfum on this page is the original, in the pale pink bottle. Intense (2023) swaps the fruit for amber and benzoin and is richer and warmer. Extradose (2025) adds rum to the blackcurrant and vanilla and is the sweetest and strongest of the line.

The colored editions go lighter. Yellow Dream (2021) is lemon, rose and musk. Coral Fantasy (2022) is kiwi, orange and jasmine. Green Stravaganza (2024) pairs a smoky Lapsang Souchong tea accord with jasmine and vanilla. Treat each as its own scent rather than a lighter or stronger version of the original.

Donna Born in Roma questions

What does Valentino Born in Roma smell like?

Juicy blackcurrant and pink pepper for the first few minutes, then a creamy jasmine heart, then a warm vanilla that Valentino describes as smoky and leathery. It’s sweet, but the woods and cashmeran keep it from smelling like dessert.

Is Born in Roma a date-night perfume?

It’s at its best in the evening. It projects well for the first couple of hours and the vanilla dry-down is warm and close. For the office, one spray is plenty.

Born in Roma vs Born in Roma Intense: which should I choose?

Choose the original if you want the jasmine and a bit of juicy fruit at the start. Choose Intense if you mainly love the vanilla and want it creamier, warmer and longer-lasting, with less fruit and more amber.

How long does Born in Roma last?

Most people get six to eight hours, with the strongest projection in the first two. It lasts longer on clothes and scarves, where the vanilla can linger into the next day.

Born in Roma vs Good Girl: which should I choose?

Both are evening florals with a warm base. Born in Roma is jasmine and smoky vanilla, a little lighter and sweeter. Good Girl adds tuberose, cacao and tonka for something darker and more sultry. If you like one, you’ll probably like the other, so try both on skin.
