Cloud vs Baccarat Rouge 540: is Cloud really a dupe?

Cloud is often sold online as a cheaper Baccarat Rouge 540, and from across a room the two can seem alike: both have an airy, sugary glow that carries. Up close they’re different perfumes. Cloud is creamy and gourmand, with coconut, praline and pear over musk; Baccarat Rouge 540 is drier and more mineral, with saffron, jasmine and ambergris. Sample Cloud first if you want an easy, inexpensive sweet scent, and Baccarat Rouge 540 if you want the real thing and are ready to pay for it. Editorial inference

How they differ Editorial inference

What they share

Both are sweet, both feel light and airy rather than heavy, and both leave a glowing trail that people notice. That shared sugary radiance is why they’re so often compared, and why they can seem alike at a distance, once the top notes have gone.

Cloud: coconut, praline and musk

Cloud opens bright with lavender, bergamot and juicy pear, then turns creamy: coconut, praline and a vanilla-like sweetness over soft musk. It’s fluffy and obviously gourmand, closer to a dessert than a crystal. It also fades sooner, settling into a skin scent within a couple of hours, though it lasts much longer on clothes.

Baccarat Rouge 540: saffron, jasmine and ambergris

Baccarat Rouge 540 is drier and stranger. Saffron and a transparent jasmine sit over a salty, mineral ambergris accord, and the sweetness comes from a caramelised-sugar note rather than cream or coconut. It projects further and lasts far longer. One catch: its ambergris accord relies on Ambroxan, which some people barely smell on themselves, so it can seem faint to you while others notice it clearly.

So is Cloud a dupe?

Not really. Cloud shares the mood, an airy, sweet glow, but not the notes or the dry, woody-mineral character. If you love Baccarat Rouge 540 for its sweetness and radiance, Cloud may scratch the itch for much less. If you love it for the saffron and the salty, mineral edge, Cloud won’t feel like a substitute.

Which should you sample first?

Choose Cloud if

You want a cosy, creamy sweet scent for every day, you don’t want to spend much, and you don’t mind reapplying or spraying your clothes.

Choose Baccarat Rouge 540 if

You want the distinctive saffron-and-ambergris original, long wear from one or two sprays, and you’re ready to pay niche prices.

Try them on skin, not paper, and compare after an hour, when the difference between Cloud’s creamy coconut and Baccarat Rouge 540’s dry, mineral sweetness is clearest. For Baccarat Rouge 540, wear a sample for a full day and ask someone nearby what they notice before buying a bottle. Our guide to samples, decants and travel sprays covers the cheapest ways to try it.
